These pebble-shaped incense charcoals are made by hand in Mount Athos, northern Greece. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a particularly holy significance in the country as it’s populated with twenty ancient Orthodox monasteries that nestle precariously into steep mountainsides. Incense is an important part of all sacred rituals and ceremonies here and has been produced by the monks of Mount Athos since the 10th century.
